Workshop: Sacred Landscapes in the Premodern World (1 ECTS)
On 31 October and 1 November 2025, a two-day workshop will be held in Utrecht entitled ‘Sacred Landscapes in the Premodern World’. The workshop focuses on the concept of ‘spatiality’, landscape, and the sacred (or religion) in the premodern world, from antiquity to the renaissance, and focusing in particular, though not exclusively, on medieval literature (and specifically saints’ lives), manuscript history, and the connection between that and the history of early printed books. The workshop encourages discussion of concepts such as ‘sacred space’, sacred landscapes, sacrality and cultural heritage in the related disciplines of literature, history, archaeology and art. Lunch and drinks will be provided by the workshop.
Attendance is free and we warmly invite you to participate. RMA students affiliated with the Research School Medieval Studies can earn 1 ECTS by attending both days of the workshop and writing a 1200 word paper on its central questions and themes.
